Tir Saile - Relief Prints

   Artists Statement
This collection of hand pulled relief prints is based on drawings and studies made along the north Mayo coast in Ireland. In the hand printing process minor differences can occur in the production of each print and I have allowed these divergences to remain. Acknowledging the slight differences between each print means each one is different and individual. This is in contrast to the usual printing process which is to produce an edition of identical images; my editions become instead a collection of individual prints.
In “Tír Sáile”, I explore the relationships between the land and the sea / sky, the hard, unchanging “land” and the fluid environments of the “sea / sky”.  I have used the combination of Lino and Wood as the printmaking matrices, the inert lino for the black “land” suggesting solidity and the wood for the “sea / sky”, as its texture suggests fluidity.
By using a restricted palette I am attempting to emphasise the abstract elements of the images, the figurative elements being a simplified description of the landscape. A dialogue is set up between the abstract and figurative.

This series of prints is based on drawings of the North Mayo coastline along the Wild Atlantic Way, these prints are for sale through the website's "Contact Me" page.
